Finding a recent graduate job can be really challenging for a fresh college grad. The hardest part is knowing where to begin. Make sure you are using every tool at your disposal and using them in the proper amount.
1. Online job websites:
There are numerous online websites to find a job. The main being Careerbuilder and Monster. Both of those sites can be a good place to start. However, you will have greater odds of getting a job if you start to get more specific with your online job search. For example, if you are searching for an engineering job, type into a google search: engineering + job board. By doing this type of search google will bring up all the online job websites that are specifically focused with the job you’re searching for. In this case it would be job sites concerned with engineering. These are the sites where you will get the inside scoop for jobs in your field. These sites are becoming the norm and trend for all fields. Doing this kind of search will help tremendously for your recent graduate job search.
2. Your local newspaper.
Searching locally can be another tool for your job search. This would be if you are wanting to stay in the current area that you are living. Simply search in the help wanted section of your local newspaper. If you really want to go secret agent, search the business section for any businesses that are new. Call them up and see if they are hiring anyone with the type of job you are looking for. This type of search can be a lot of luck, but it can also be very powerful when looking for a recent graduate job. If you don’t care where you would like to live keep with the online job search.
3. Your network.
Make sure you’re letting your friends and family know that your are actively searching for a job. Don’t be afraid to ask for referrals. Ask them if they know of any openings anywhere. As they say, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Note: Make sure you have your college graduate resume handy while talking to your network.
4. Company’s.
If you have any idea of companies you would like to work for either now or in the future make sure to reach out with them. Figure out who would potentially hire you and call that person. The idea is to keep your resume in the back of their head in case a potential opening comes up. Send them your resume. And don’t forget to keep in touch!
